In 2015, the founder went to school for iOS Mobile Engineering and came up with the idea while working on a class project.
A podcast explained that keeping track of expenses was key to reducing stress, gaining wealth, and becoming financially independent. He wanted to use his development skills to help himself, his friends, and his family build better money habits and become financially secure. $imple was the result, creating awareness of spending through expense tracking and encouraging regular saving into investments with compound interest.
The original design had only a ➕ and ➖ button with a number in the middle of the two that indicated the cumulative all-time balance. However, recurring payments and income had to be repeatedly entered, which was tedious, so the application expanded to allow this functionality.
The app evolved to incorporate savings, a net worth wealth monitor, a daily allowance, charts to visualize spending by custom-created categories, a detailed financial picture history, AI to read receipts and enter details automatically, a tip calculator to help out on dates, a notepad (because why not?), etc.
From humble Excel spreadsheet beginnings, $imple became a full-featured mobile application that made keeping track of your money easy and surprisingly fun.
Now whoever wants to use the application, can download it to their phone and use it on their desktop computer free of charge.
